Description:
Cathy received her Juris Doctorate at University of Idaho School of Law in 1981. She spent the first several years of her legal career as a general practitioner in small firms. She spent three years as a referee (administrative judge) for the Idaho Industrial Commission. She was selected as a magistrate for the Ada County, Idaho District Court in 1988, where she presided over family court cases through 1992. She then returned to private practice, focusing primarily on family law as a litigator and a Court-approved mediator. She has practiced exclusively in the field of family law since 1997. Cathy is a member of the Family Law Section of the Idaho State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the American Association and Family Conciliation Courts. She is a past member of the evidence and continuing legal education committees of the Idaho State Bar. She has presented at continuing education seminars sponsored by the Idaho Judiciary and the Idaho State Bar. My thoughts on divorce and custody cases: Frankly, most family law disputes are best resolved through agreement of the partiesa€"if necessary with help from legal professionals. This not only avoids the time, expense and emotional turmoil of a trial, it also usually results in less damage to the partiesa€™ relationship. Certainly there are still hard feelings, but at least an agreement between two people, as opposed to the aftermath of an a€I won, you losta€ trial is a basis upon which to build a new and different relationship for co-parenting children. Still, there are some cases that simply need to go to trial. When I litigate those cases, I think my prior experience as a Judge gives me an advantage in knowing how to present my clienta€™s position in the way most likely to give the Judge the facts he/she needs, focus on the precise legal issues the Court wants to hear, and make the strongest argument for my clienta€™s position.
